Candle Wax Comparison: Which Candle Wax Is Best for Your Home?
Share
Which candle wax is best? It depends on whether you want an unscented candle, a scented container candle, or a freestanding pillar. Compare the finished candle’s ingredients, format and stated burn time, rather than choosing by the wax name alone.

Candle wax comparison at a glance
| Wax | What to know |
|---|---|
| Paraffin | A petroleum-derived wax, widely used for its fragrance performance and smooth finish. |
| Soy | A plant-derived wax made from soybeans. Surface frosting can occur and is usually a cosmetic feature. |
| Beeswax | A wax made by bees. At CocoBee, we use it on its own for our pure beeswax candles and as the main ingredient in our signature scented blend. |
| Coconut | A coconut-oil-derived candle material, often used in blends. At CocoBee, it adds a softer texture to our signature blend. |
Paraffin wax
Paraffin is widely used in candle making. It can provide strong scent throw and a smooth appearance. If avoiding petroleum-derived ingredients is a priority for you, check the full wax composition before buying.
Soy wax
Soy wax is a familiar plant-based option for container candles. It can develop a whitish crystalline surface, known as frosting, or an uneven top after cooling. These visual changes do not automatically mean a candle is faulty. A plant-based label alone does not explain how a wax was sourced or processed.
We tried soy wax when developing CocoBee, then chose a different blend. Read why we use beeswax and coconut wax instead of soy for the reasoning behind our choice.
Beeswax
Beeswax is central to CocoBee. Our beeswax candle collection includes candles made from 100% beeswax without added fragrance. Check individual product descriptions to distinguish these from products using our scented blend.
Coconut wax
We use coconut wax to soften our scented beeswax blend and achieve the texture and scent performance we want. Coconut wax is processed from coconut oil; it is not simply raw oil poured into a candle.
Is a blend better than a single wax?
Neither is automatically better. A harder wax can suit a freestanding candle, while a softer formulation can suit a container. A blend lets a maker combine properties for a particular candle.
Our signature scented blend is 70% beeswax and 30% coconut wax. Our pure beeswax candles serve a different purpose: a candle without added fragrance. Both have a place in the CocoBee collection.
